Dental pulp is the soft area in the center of your tooth where the veins, nerves, and connective tissue are located. If the dental pulp becomes infected, Dr. Spelman and Dr. Orlando may recommend a root canal in Hopewell, New Jersey. The dental pulp may become damaged because of deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, large fillings, a chip or crack in the tooth, or an injury to the face. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you may need root canal therapy:
- Severe toothache
- Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Discoloration of a tooth
- Swelling and pain in the gums
- A pimple on the gums that will not go away
When performing root canal therapy, our dentists will first take X-rays to see the shape of your root canals and check for infection in the surrounding bone. An access hole will be made in the tooth, through which the decayed pulp and bacteria will be removed. Root canal files are used to clean out your tooth all the way down the roots. After the tooth is cleaned, it will be filled and sealed. In some cases, a dental crown will be needed to support the tooth.
